CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Jennifer and Michael Jones’ home now hides the scars from the 2020 derecho. They initially hired Luxury Kitchens LLC to repair some of the damage, because their friend, Ryan Avila-Burillo, owned it. The Jones’ say Ryan replaced windows and flooring. But they say the work was shoddy at best. Several windows weren’t sealed, allowing water to get in and damage walls. The tiling on the kitchen floor, they say, wasn’t level. When they asked for a refund, Avila-Burillo shut down his company. The Jones’ said they lost about $14,000–too much for small claims court, but too little to make it worth it to hire an attorney. The Jones’ were more upset when TV9 told them what was found in court records–a history of fraud and unpaid debts. Iowa court records show Green State Credit Union is going after Ryan and Luxury Kitchens for more than $600 in overdraft fees. Ryan’s husband, Joseph, was convicted at least five times in California for burglary and shoplifting. The last conviction was in 2014, when Joseph and a partner were making their own credit cards and using them to make dozens of purchases. Court records show he still owes about $4,500 in fees and restitution, but stopped making payments in March 2021. In Iowa, Citibank also sued Joseph this year for failing to pay more than $8,000 on a Best Buy Credit Card. Now, seeing what’s happened to former Chophouse workers who haven’t been paid, the Jones’ worry the couple is taking advantage of more Iowans. Property records also show the Avila-Burillos sold their home in Cedar Rapids just weeks before shutting down Chophouse Downtown, for $310,000. That’s $130,000 more than they bought it for just six years ago. A TV9 Reporter was able to contact Ryan Avila-Burillo on Thursday, when he declined to talk about his unpaid former employees. That same reporter tried again Friday to talk to Ryan and Joseph, but they have not returned any calls.

It happened around 6 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of 9th Avenue South in Clinton, according to a media release. Upon arrival, crews found a two-story apartment building with smoke showing from the back. Witnesses on the scene told crews that there was still at least one and possibly two people still inside, according to officials. In addition to the aggressive search, officials said crews made a rapid knock down on the well-developed fire. Salvage and overhaul operations continued to make sure the fire was fully extinguished.
