Iowa school districts must submit to the state today their respective budget plans, including how much they’re going to collect in property taxes for the next school year. The problem is they don’t know how much aid they’re getting from the state. The Superintendent of the Hudson Community School District says districts must come up with their best guess of what their tax levy will be for the upcoming school year. The House passed an education spending bill that includes a three percent increase in spending. The Senate hasn’t taken action on the bill. Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver says there’s no set date for action in the Senate.

One person is dead after a crash in Jones County Thursday afternoon. It happened just south of Anamosa near the intersection of U.S. Highway 151 and Shaw Road. Deputies say a car was heading south on 151 when another car pulled out in front of it. Four other people were hurt in the crash.

Dubuque now has a new program to help people with low incomes find housing. The Security Deposit Assistance Program is open to households that make less than 50 percent of the area median income. It would help them cover security deposits for certain rental units in the city. People can apply to the City for the equivalent of 2 months’ rent and is first come, first serve. The city has $50,000 to assist those who qualify.

The Dubuque County Sheriff’s Office says it will lock the lobby overnight at the Law Enforcement Center, a place some homeless people have relied on as a place to spend the night. The Sheriff’s Office says over the past few months several people have left behind trash and other personal items. Now, a call button is installed so people can get access after business hours.

The Drake Relays are about a month away, and organizers are hard at work finding the best bulldog to represent the school—and that includes getting ready for the annual “beautiful bulldog” competition. This year is the 45th annual Beautiful Bulldog Contest. The University held a lottery drawing to select 30 contestants, and 10 alternates for the competition. The official competition will be held Sunday, April 21. It helps kick off the week-long Drake Relays celebrations.
