A Dubuque man is accused of killing his mother Thursday morning at the home they shared. Police found the body of 46-year-old Jennifer Dazey at a home near Avoca and Delaware streets. Through the investigation, they connected her son to her death. Officers arrested 28-year-old Tyler Dazey on a first degree murder charge. Few other details are being released right now.
Governor Kim Reynolds was in Cedar Rapids to rally support for newly proposed education changes during a speech before the city’s annual Metro Economic Alliance Meeting. She recently proposed an overhaul the state’s area education agencies. Right now, districts are required to send special education funding to AEAs. Her proposal would give school districts control over how to use special education funding, whether it be through their current AEA, a different AEA, or a private company.
The Iowa legislature may consider harsher penalties for the fake threats like swatting. Swatting is a fake call to police, typically for an active shooter, with the goal of getting the police SWAT team to respond. Right now, that qualifies as a misdemeanor in Iowa for making a false report. But a House subcommittee advanced a bill that would make swatting a felony carrying a prison sentence up to 10 years.
The University of Iowa has officially removed the interim tag and named Beth Goetz Iowa’s next athletic director. Goetz has been in the role since August following Gary Barta’s retirement. Prior to her arrival in Iowa City in 2022 as the deputy of athletics, Goetz served as an athletic director at Minnesota and Ball State. Her promotion is effective immediately, making her the only female athletic director in the Big Ten.
One silver lining to the “winter weather wallop” we’ve had recently is the impact on farmers. Along with replenishing moisture, farmers say the snow is also a good insulator. Area blueberry crops will benefit because they have shallow roots, making them vulnerable to the winter elements if there is not a good snow layer on top of them. Farmers are banking on rainfall come spring and summer, with this snow a good leg up heading into the spring.
