Police are looking into the background of a 17-year-old Perry, Iowa student who shot and killed one student and injured five other people at the high school yesterday. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation identified the gunman as Dylan Butler, who they say died from a self-inflicted wound. Police say a sixth grade student was shot and killed. The school district said high school principal Dan Marburger was shot and injured. Four students were also shot and injured. DCI says those hospitalized are expected to recover. The shooting at Perry High School, northwest of Des Moines, saw students and staff barricading themselves in offices and classrooms. Others ran from the school. It occurred as an early morning breakfast program for middle and high school students was taking place. Police also say a “rudimentary” explosive device was found at the school and was safely disarmed.
Police say Dylan Butler had made social media posts shortly before the shooting. They say he was armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. Vigils were held last night in the community, including one at a city park in Perry.
Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff through Sunday to honor the victims of Thursday morning’s shooting. She called it a senseless tragedy that has shaken our entire state to its core. U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley called the shooting “appalling violence” and said he is “grateful for the quick response by school officials and law enforcement”.
