The U.S. House has voted overwhelmingly to prevent a government shutdown. New Republican Speaker Mike Johnson got enough Democratic votes to overshadow opposition from conservative Republicans who were against the bill. The vote was 336 to 95, with 93 Republicans voting no. Northeast Iowa U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson says she voted for the bill to keep the government open as Republicans continue to work on appropriations bills that cut spending.

Testimony will enter its second day today for a Fairfield teenager accused of killing his Spanish teacher over a bad grade. Jeremy Goodale’s father was the first to take the stand for the defense. Dean Goodale says the COVID pandemic and his mother leaving the family left a big impact on his son’s life. A psychologist later testified the peak age for teens to commit violent crimes is between 16 and 18 years old. Goodale was 16 years old when he and his friend Willard Miller killed Nohema Graber in 2021. Miller was already sentenced to life in prison. Goodale’s sentencing hearing continues today.

Officials have now released the name of the pedestrian who was hit and killed by a car in Cedar Rapids on Sunday. Police say Bonnie Stover and a man were hit by 45-year old Kyle Kubite who is accused of driving while under the influence. The other pedestrian is expected to recover.

A celebration of life service is set for later this morning for the Monticello man shot and killed outside the local Fareway store last week. Aaron McAtee’s services will be held from 11 to noon at the Berndes Center. Police says McAtee was the victim of a random shooter last Tuesday while working at the store’s loading dock. A suspect, Nathan Russell, faces charges of first degree murder and going armed with intent.

A University of Iowa Police Department K-9 will work his last Hawkeye game this weekend. K-9 Jago started with the department in 2014 and is stepping away due to his age. He specialized in explosive detection and patrol. He’s helped secure campus events ranging from Hawkeye athletics seasons to presidential visits. He turned ten years old Monday and is the department’s longest serving K-9.
