Cedar Rapids school officials say the additional precautions put in place after a threatening on-line message will stay in place for classes today and perhaps the full week. The School District and police tried to reassure parents and the public that the District’s 31 schools are safe. The District says about 40 percent of its students did not attend classes yesterday. Police say they don’t know who was behind the threatening message. Classes were suspended Monday after the initial threat was reported Saturday night. Police and the District have not been specific about the threat nor its target but say it’s an on-going, intricate investigation.

A juvenile is being charged with 1st degree Harassment and Threat of Terrorism in connection to a threat made to the West Delaware High School. Officials arrested the suspect last week after receiving a tip about possible violence at the high school. No weapons were found at the school.

An Illinois man will spend 25 years in prison for a wrong-way crash that killed a Cedar Rapids man. Tyler Lee killed 23-year old David Nguyen in 2021 by crashing into an SUV. Nguyen was a passenger in the SUV. He was on his way home from a birthday party when Lee’s vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the vehicle head-on. Two other people in the SUV were seriously hurt.

The federal government is planning a nationwide test, which will send an alert to all smart phones across the U.S. this afternoon. The alert will be issued at 1:20 this afternoon. The test will include wireless emergency alerts in addition to television and radio. You should also receive a text message telling you it’s only a test.

Dubuque will soon start charging a fee at its public charging stations for electric vehicles. The city says it will charge 17 cents per kilowatt hour at its three charging stations inside the Intermodal Parking Ramp. Based on usage so far this year, they estimate it will cost the average user about $2.50. It will help cover the cost of maintaining the chargers and pay a state tax.

The NASCAR Cup Series is coming to Iowa for the first time ever. The race will be held on June 16, 2024 at the Iowa Speedway in Newton. NASCAR will also bring its Xfinity Series to the speedway that weekend.
