ALGONA, Iowa (KCRG) – The funeral service for a fallen Iowa police officer was held Wednesday morning. The service for Officer Kevin Cram started at 10:30 a.m. at the Algona Community School gymnasium. Cram was a 10-year veteran in law enforcement. He was shot and killed while trying to arrest a man last week in Algona. Loved ones held a visitation for Officer Cram Tuesday at the Ed and Betty Wilcox Performing Arts Center in Algona. Cram’s patrol car was parked outside the center. People have been putting flowers and flags on the car to honor him. Students tied blue ribbons around trees as a tribute to Officer Cram. Kyle Ricke is the man accused of killing Officer Cram. He’s charged with first degree murder. Ricke was arrested in Minnesota, where he remains in custody. He will be extradited back to Iowa at a later date.
ELY, Iowa (KCRG) – People in Ely will get to decide plans for the development of a new Community Center and recreation space. A referendum on the November ballot will ask voters if they support the $7 million project. Ely’s current community center is located in the basement of City Hall. It’s a meeting space, but there is no room for most recreational activities. Also, the city doesn’t have any schools with gym space so there are few opportunities for children to exercise or enjoy indoor programs. While Ely does have outdoor trails, supporters of a new community center say it’s difficult to hold events and programs if the weather changes. If the bond referendum passes in November, taxpayers can expect to pay roughly $25 to $40 a month to cover the cost. The City plans to hold several pop-up events before then for voters to learn more about the city’s plans.
