More Iowa and Iowa State players face new charges related to sports wagering. There are now eight Hawkeye and Cyclone athletes named in the investigation, including Iowa State running back Jirehl Brock. This is the second wave of charges filed in the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s probe of player involvement in on-line gambling. On the Iowa side, new people charged include Jack Johnson, along with two former players, Reggie Bracy II and Arland Bruce IV, and a graduate assistant with the football program last season, Owen O’Brien. The newly charged from Iowa State also include current football players Brock, DeShawn Hanika, Isaiah Lee, and Jacob Remsburg. All are accused of tampering with records as a way to hide their identities while placing sports wagers.
A Linn County jury found the man accused of driving through a group of protestors last year not guilty all charges. David Huston was charged with assault and leaving the scene of a crash. It happened in June of last year in Cedar Rapids, just days after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The jury sided with Huston, saying he didn’t intentionally drive toward people and had the green light.
Cedar Rapids Community School District officials unveiled two new electric buses and charging stations. They are the first all-electric buses to operate in an Iowa school district. Not only are they expected to reduce greenhouse gases and pollutants, the District says the technology will also be a tool in the classroom.
The Iowa State Fair is now open in Des Moines. Each year, the fair attracts more than a million people from all over the world. Tonight’s grandstand act will be Tyler Hubbard of “Florida Georgia Line”. There are also 64 new foods and drinks this year from “Bacon and Sweet Corn Lobster Rolls” to “Walleye on a Stick”.
People of all ages shucked thousands of ears of corn for the St. Jude Sweet Corn Festival, which starts tonight in Cedar Rapids. There are 22 different booths, including funnel cakes, pie and ice cream, as well as a beverage tent, a country store and a silent auction. This is the 48th year for the festival, which runs through Sunday.
