Thousands of RAGBRAI riders have left Toledo and Tama and are heading to Coralville. Today may be the hottest day in the Register’s annual ride across Iowa that started Sunday in Sioux City and ends Saturday in Davenport. In Coralville, the city says it’s expecting the area around S.T. Morrison Park to be an overnight stay for 40,000 people. Crews have put together three entertainment stages and the group “Bush” will headline tonight’s performances. This year’s ride has been bigger than in the past as RAGBRAI marks its 50th year.

Court documents show deputies arrested an Iowa state senator during RAGBRAI. The sheriff says he was working RAGBRAI and saw a large group in the middle of a road, which needed clearing. The sheriff says he asked Republican Senator Adrian Dickey of Packwood to move, but Dickey said he wouldn’t and advised the sheriff to arrest him. Prosecutors charged him with interference with official acts. A court hearing is set for August 8.

A man has died at the scene of a crash on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids. Police say it happened about 5:30 yesterday morning near the intersection of Wiley Boulevard and 22nd Avenue Southwest. They say the driver of a vehicle that rear-ended another vehicle died. But the death wasn’t a result of the crash. The people in the vehicle that was hit had minor injuries.

Dubuque is getting ready to re-think its trash. Almost 3,000 so-called “tipper carts” will be rolled out between now and the beginning of October. These new garbage cans will eliminate the need for public works employees to physically lift and empty the containers. This has been a month’s long transformation process. The city began delivering the bigger and more efficient trash cans last fall.
