Cedar Rapids’ School District is taking a different tact when it comes to a planned multi-million dollar school bond referendum. The District is splitting the planned $415 million request into two separate referendums to improve middle and high schools. The first of the votes could go before voters as soon as November. The District says its Phase One goals include buying land to build a new middle school in the north of the district, adding turf fields, and career and technical education at Kennedy, Jefferson, and Washington high schools. It would also include kitchen and cafeteria upgrades at Kennedy high school, renovations to the metro high school gym, and renovations at Franklin middle school to convert it into an 800 student capacity 7th and 8th grade center.  Right now there is no date set for when the vote could take place.

Temperatures next week across Iowa will be topping 90 degrees. That is a concern for hospital emergency room workers all along the RAGBRAI route as they prepare for an especially busy week. With an overnight stop planned for Coralville, medical centers like Mercy Iowa City are prepared to optimize their staff on the day-of, and days surrounding their stop. The group “Think Iowa City” says it currently has about 500 volunteers signed up, but is still looking to fill another 200 spots. Duties range from campground attendants to check-in volunteers. But they are also relying on bicyclists to keep each other safe as well.
