Iowa Senate democrats have decided to change leadership by replacing Senator Zach Wahls of Coralville with Senator Pam Jochum of Dubuque. No reason was given for the change. Wahls served as the Democratic minority leader since 2021.
The strike is over at Dubuque’s A.Y. McDonald Manufacturing. The International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers ratified an agreement after the first strike at the company in 32 years. Workers walked off the job last week. The union says the agreement ends the shortest strike ever at the company. The company makes water works, pump, plumbing, and natural gas products.
The mother of one of the Black Hawk County cousins who were kidnapped and murdered in 2012 is back in jail on drug charges. Fayette County Sheriff’s office deputies did a search of an apartment in West Union late Wednesday night. They seized meth, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and money. Deputies arrested Misty Cook and Nathan Slaughter. They are charged with several charges including meth and marijuana possession-3rd offense. Cook is the mother of Lyric Cook-Morrisey. Lyric and her cousin Elizabeth Collins disappeared in July of 2012 while riding their bikes in Evansdale. Hunters found their bodies five months later. Authorities have not made any arrests in connection with their deaths.
Renovations are underway at the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on the UNI campus in Cedar Falls. An event Thursday kicked off the project, that includes a new entry plaza, a lounge, expanded ticket office and concessions counters and a new kitchen. Renovations include seating, restroom and lighting upgrades as well as energy efficient improvements. The University says donors have raised more than $14 million of the nearly $15 million goal.
