IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) -According to a Caring Bridge page, Iowa National Guard Soldier Corey Hite has passed away after being hit by a car on May 22nd in Iowa City. The Iowa National Guard confirmed SFC Corey Hite was hit by a car on May 22nd in Iowa City as he was out for a jog. A GoFundMe page set up by family says he suffered life-threatening injuries, including brain swelling, multiple skull fractures, a broken pelvis, and holes in his lung and kidney, and another post said Hite was three weeks from retirement when the crash happened. An update on his Caring Bridge page said Hite passed away on Sunday. Iowa City police have not confirmed Hite’s identity and have said very little about the crash, not even issuing a news release on it. After TV9 reached out, Iowa City Police said a pedestrian was hit by a car shortly after 4 p.m. that day at Melrose Ave and Kennedy Parkway, just west of Iowa City West High School. Police say the pedestrian suffered “serious injuries” and the driver was not injured.
DAVENPORT, Iowa (KCRG) – The family of Branden Colvin Sr. confirms he was found deceased Saturday at the building that partially collapsed in downtown Davenport. The family told TV9′s sister station KWQC they were notified by the Police and Fire chiefs Saturday afternoon. Colvin’s family says they will issue a statement but want to thank everyone for their support.
DES MOINES, Iowa (KXEL)- More than 10,000 students have applied for private school scholarships since applications for Iowa’s Students First Education Savings Account program opened last Wednesday. Officials say they received 10,001 applications in less than 72 hours, with the state successfully processing one application every 12 seconds on the first day alone. The application period will run through June 30 at 11:59 p.m. Families who choose to send their children to a private school will get $7,598 in an education savings account; that’s the same amount of funding the state provides for each child that attends a public school. The money can be used for things like tuition or textbooks.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Thanks to a recent update to FDA guidelines, restaurants can have dogs in outdoor areas, provided they have approval from local regulators. Iowa law was changed in 2020 to allow restaurants to host pets on patios without a waiver from the department. There is a long list of rules that restaurants have to follow including that dogs can’t get to the patio by walking through the restaurant, and while on duty, employees can’t have contact with pets.
