Parents can apply for Iowa’s school vouchers program starting this morning. The governor’s “students first” education savings account application process starts at 8 in the morning. It gives education savings accounts–or school vouchers–for students to attend private schools. Parents could use the money for things like tuition, textbooks, and tutoring.
The manhunt is over and the man charged with killing a Hardin County woman is now in custody. Police announced their search for Nathan Bahr Friday after they found the body of Desiree Folsom inside an Eldora home. The 28-year-old is now charged with first degree murder in connection with her death. Investigators say he shot and killed Folsom before leaving the area. New court documents shows Folsom filed a restraining order against Bahr earlier this month, citing domestic abuse. The court held a hearing on the matter just one day before her body was found.
At least 5 people are still unaccounted for after Sunday’s apartment building collapse in Davenport. A woman was found in the building Monday night, just hours after city officials said they planned to start demolition of the building. That led to protests outside the site with critics saying the city should not give up on its search and rescue efforts. The mayor says he wants people to also understand the process of demolition doesn’t mean knocking the building down right away. City leaders say the structure is unsafe, and becoming more unstable as time passes.

This year’s ‘celebration of all things Hawkeye’ will mark a milestone for the program’s mascot. Herky turns 75 years old this year and will be the focus of this September’s unofficial kickoff to the new football season. Every year, the Iowa River Landing is covered in black and gold for FRYfest, the day before Iowa takes on Utah State inside Kinnick Stadium. The event will feature previous Herkys talking about their memories from their time as the mascot.
