A former priest of the Archdiocese of Dubuque is facing allegations of sexual abuse of a minor. The Archdiocese announced yesterday that the incident allegedly involving Father Leo Riley happened between 1985 and 1986, while he was a priest at the Church of the Resurrection of Dubuque. Leaders say the allegation was reported on May 5th. Father Riley was previously accused of sexual abusing a minor in 2014, but leaders said there was no information supporting this. Father Riley currently serves in a Diocese in Florida.
People are not allowed to swim at Terry Trueblood Recreation Area in Iowa City after new reports showed high bacteria levels. Officials say this is due to E-Coli detected in Sand Lake. This advisory will last until the water quality improves.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis plans to announce his 2024 presidential campaign today in a “Twitter Spaces” event with Elon Musk. It’s expected to be “the first time something like this has happened on social media,” and will feature real time questions and answers. DeSantis is seen as Donald Trump’s leading rival for the 2024 GOP nomination.
Cedar Rapids crews worked to rescue a worker after a trench collapsed yesterday morning in the 600 block of 1st Avenue Southwest. That’s near Saint Patrick’s Church. Crews found a private utility contractor who was doing work at the time, trapped at the bottom of the trench. They say dirt covered him from the waist down. Rescuers say it took just over 30 minutes to get him out safely. They say this is the first time they’ve performed this type of rescue in the city.
Workers at the closing Tama Paper Mill are getting help as they try to find a new job. More than 80 workers at Graphic Packaging International’s Tama Mill will lost their job after the mill announced it would shut down later this year, after more than 100 years in business. Graphic Packaging says it will continue to help workers find employment elsewhere after the mill closes.
