Upper Iowa University is cutting staff and closing seven of its regional education centers. Those closures don’t include their main campus in Fayette. The University cut 37 jobs across all of its locations–22 of them at the main campus. School officials blame shifting student needs and lower enrollment for the cutbacks.

 

A Cedar Rapids woman died after a fire broke out in her garage. It happened Thursday morning in the 1800 block of Hamilton Street Southwest. They say the garage was filled with items making it difficult to get to a woman who was trapped inside. The fire department reports the woman was taken to the hospital but did not survive. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

 

The Iowa State Patrol is issuing a new warning about high speeds on Interstate 80. Air patrols overhead clocked three drivers recently, going more than 100 miles per hour in the Iowa City and Coralville areas. One driver actually reached 121 miles per hour on Interstate 80. In a Facebook post, the patrol said two of the three drivers were teenagers–including one who was still driving with a learner’s permit.

 

Police in Iowa and elsewhere are joining the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s annual Memorial Day “Click It or Ticket” campaign. Starting Monday, law enforcement will be on the lookout for unbuckled drivers and passengers. More than 11,000 unbuckled people died in crashes in 2021, and more than half of all people killed during the nighttime hours were not wearing their seat belts.

 

The Salvation Army in Waterloo says it’s noticing an increased need for food in the area. It’s already served more than 1,000 meals this year, which the organization says typically doesn’t happen until June. The Salvation Army says attendance for its noon lunch program nearly doubled in January and February compared to last year. The group is asking for more supplies to help fill that need. They’re looking for these items, including bottled drinks, bars, canned food and fruit.
