CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Firefighters extinguished a small fire at an apartment building on Oakland Road in Cedar Rapids early Monday morning. Crews said they arrived to find a small fire and smoke in one of the apartments in the building, located in the 1400 block of Oakland Road Northeast, just before 2 a.m. on Monday. The apartment sustained minor fire and moderate smoke damage. The one occupant of the apartment was able to get out safely, and was not injured. The fire remains under investigation.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KCRG) – Republican presidential candidate Asa Hutchinson will return to Iowa to speak in multiple eastern Iowa cities this week. In a press release on Monday, the former governor of Arkansas’ campaign said he will visit Cedar Falls, Davenport, Muscatine, West Branch, Wilton and Clinton. He said he plans to speak about reducing federal spending, securing the border and addressing the drug crisis. Hutchinson recently launched an online campaign headquarters for Iowans at asa2004.com/iowa to highlight public events in the state. The website says he’ll be in Waterloo on May 17, Davenport on May 18, and Clinton on May 19.
FOLLETTS, Iowa (KWQC) – Deputies are investigating after a dead body was discovered in the backwaters of the Wapsipinicon River on Saturday, May 13, and now, deputies say they have identified the body that was found. According to deputies, the teen’s body that was found in the backwaters of the Wapsipinicon River on Saturday morning at approximately 10:28 a.m. by an off-duty Camanche Firefighter, is that of 18-year-old Benjamin Williams, who had been reported missing earlier that day by two teenage campers. Deputies said the two teenage campers reported Williams missing from their campsite on Saturday at approximately 9:45 a.m. The Clinton County Sheriff’s Office said they then responded to that missing person report out of the Ben Martinsen Wildlife Area. According to deputies, upon arrival, they met with the two teenage campers, who had reported their 18-year-old friend, Benjamin Williams, missing from the campsite at approximately 9:45 a.m. During the search, deputies said that they used the assistance of a K-9 unit from the Clinton Police Department and a drone. Later, at approximately 10:28 a.m., deputies said that Williams was found dead at the scene. The case remains under investigation by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office and the Clinton County Medical Examiner.
DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is urging Iowans to buckle their seat belts ahead of a national seat belt campaign next week. May 22nd, 2023 through June 4th, 2023 is the National Traffic Safety Administration’s ‘Click it or Ticket’ campaign, and officials are warning that the perception of people wearing seat belts is higher than the total. In 2022, 55% of traffic fatalities were people that were unbelted. in 2023 so far, that number is around 60%. The Bureau is urging that everyone, whether they are a child or adult or in the front seat or back, buckle up. Hundreds of lives have reportedly been lost in the last few years because people were not wearing seatbelts.
