The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations says it is investigating allegations concerning sports gambling involving more than 40 Iowa and Iowa State student athletes. That violates NCAA rules. It involves 26 UI athletes across five sports–including football and men’s basketball and baseball–as well as a full-time staff member. Iowa State said 15 of its student athletes in three sports, including football, are being investigated. Neither school identified those athletes but said it has held some out in recent games. The NCAA prohibits student-athletes, coaches, and other team officials from betting on sports. The Iowa DCI released a statement saying no criminal charges have been filed at this time.
A federal jury has found Leo Kelly of Cedar Rapids guilty on all seven counts connected to the January 6th disturbance at the U.S. Capitol. The most serious of Kelly’s charges is obstruction of an official proceeding–a felony that carries up to 20 years in prison. Kelly says he followed a crowd into the U.S. Senate Chamber on January 6, 2021, where he said he remained for 30 minutes to an hour. Seven other Iowans have been convicted or pleaded guilty in the January 6th incident.

UnityPoint Hospice is hosting an event they’re calling “Let Love Fly” all this week. Families can get kite kits to help them remember loved ones who have passed away. The kits have a blank kite and plenty of art supplies to personalize them any way they want. Hospice leaders say this kind of effort can give people an outlet to make sure they can have the right kind of support during what can be a difficult time.
