CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Multiple investigations are underway regarding active student-athletes in the state. The Iowa Gaming Commission confirmed that it is investigating Iowa athletics just days after the university stated that it withheld athletes from competition due to a potential NCAA violation. Iowa released a statement last Friday saying it had “withheld some student-athletes from competition” due to “a potential NCAA violation.” The University of Iowa’s Office of Strategic Communication cites 26 current student-athletes as well as one full-time employee of the UI Department of Athletics as being involved in the investigation. Iowa State Athletics also released the following statement regarding some of its student-athletes: “Iowa State University and its Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is aware of online sports wagering allegations involving approximately 15 of our active student-athletes from the sports of football, wrestling, and track & field in violation of NCAA rules. The university has notified the NCAA and will take the appropriate actions to resolve these issues.” The State of Iowa Board of Regents issued the following statement: “The Board of Regents is aware of concerns related to online gambling involving individuals associated with the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. The Board of Regents and the universities will fully cooperate with any investigations related to these concerns. We are closely monitoring the situation and have confidence that university administrators at each institution will take all necessary steps to ensure ongoing compliance.”
LOUISA COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – At approximately 12:55 p.m. Monday, Iowa State Patrol responded to a report of a crash near the Highway 92 and L Ave intersection. According to investigators, a 2006 Toyota Rav4 was traveling eastbound on Highway 92 and attempted to pass a semi. A 2011 Chevy Silverado was traveling westbound on the highway and struck the Toyota as it attempted to pass. Both vehicles came to a halt in a field north of the roadway. Three people were killed as a result of the crash. One individual was airlifted to Univ. of Iowa Hospitals for treatment of their injuries; another was transported to Univ. of Iowa Hospitals via ambulance for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The victim’s names are being withheld pending notification of family. The accident remains under investigation at this time.
DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a disaster emergency proclamation on Monday, opening up a dozen counties to disaster relief aid. Reynolds cited 5 counties that received damage from Sunday’s storms, including Benton, Iowa, Jasper, Muscatine, and Poweshiek counties. It opens up certain state resources for disaster recovery, as well as relief grants of up to $5,000 for households earning up to 200% of the poverty level. More information on applying for disaster relief grants can be found on the state’s website. Victims of the storms have 45 days to apply.
WATERLOO, Iowa (KCRG) – Police have identified the child who died after being attacked by a dog at a Waterloo home Thursday. Nine-month-old Navy Smith died in the attack, and a 49-year-old woman was taken to the hospital for severe injuries. It happened at about 7:22 a.m. in the 1200 block of Scott Avenue. The dog is described as a 9-year-old male boxer/hound mix.
