From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:

The Iowa Supreme Court is expected to hand down its judgment this summer on what’s known as the “heartbeat bill” after hearing arguments yesterday. Currently, abortion is legal in Iowa until 20 weeks of pregnancy. That was protected by a state Supreme Court decision in 2018… but thrown into question after the federal decision overturning Roe v. Wade. The Alliance Defending Freedom is representing Governor Kim Reynolds in court, and says recent changes in the law justify lifting the injunction and enacting the bill that makes abortions illegal at six weeks post-conception, before most women know they’re pregnant. The Iowa Supreme Court is expected to announce its ruling in June.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services says some Medicaid members’ personal information was compromised in a national data breach. But they say the state Medicaid system was not breached. Health and Human Services says between June 30-July 5, 2022, Independent Living Systems was hit by a data breach that exposed personal data across several states. They say it impacted 20,800 Iowa Medicaid members. Those impacted will get letters about the issue starting this week, explaining what was compromised and how people can protect themselves.

Day two of testimony is to start this morning in the trial of the man charged with killing his girlfriend’s stepmother. Tacoa Talley was arrested last year after officials found Jodie Bevans dead in her home during a welfare check. He’s charged with first degree murder. Samantha Bevans is also charged with first-degree murder in her stepmother’s death. Investigators say Talley and Bevans suffocated Jodie with a pillow before robbing her and escaping–then made a Snapchat video bragging about the killing.

Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman made it official… he’s retiring after more than a decade with the department. The city agreed to a severance package for him yesterday. State law caps the age of a peace officer at 65. Jerman is 66, so his peace officer certification is expired. The city must start the process of replacing him while an interim chief leads the department.
