The 170-day old Ingredion strike could soon be over. Union members in Cedar Rapids could vote as soon as Sunday on a tentative agreement negotiators reached Thursday. Roughly 115 workers went on strike in August after a disputes over wages, benefits and rights for workers. Union President Mike Moore says negotiations for this tentative agreement took two days, though he couldn’t share details on the terms. He hopes membership will vote on the new deal this Sunday. More than half–51%–of members must approve the deal for the strike to officially end.
Union workers at Aramark Uniform Services in Iowa and other states could go on strike by the end of the month. This would affect more than 180 Teamsters Local 238 members. The drivers and plant workers say they want increased wages and improved working conditions. Aramark is one of the largest uniform service providers in the Midwest. It has nine Iowa locations including Cedar Rapids, Dubuque and Waterloo.
The Jones county attorney’s office announced it will likely not file charges in connection with the recent deadly home break-in. Police responded to a call in Monticello January 11th where they say Pattrick O’Brine – who was masked and armed – broke into the home through a basement window. The man living there shot and killed O’Brine. The county attorney released a statement saying evidence shows the use of deadly force was justified, but adds the investigation is ongoing.
Iowa’s airports saw slightly more firearms at TSA checkpoints in 2022, compared to previous years. The Eastern Iowa airport in Cedar Rapids found six guns last year. The state averaged a little more than four per year between 2018 and 2022. It’s important to note, overall travel was down for two of those years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Julien Dubuque Film Festival winter film series kicked off in Dubuque. From now until March, there will be a screenings and film sessions before the 12th annual film festival starts in April. All movies will be shown at Hotel Julien Dubuque.
