From the KCRG-TV9 Newsroom:

Welcome back to work after a wintry Christmas holiday. We are expecting a bit of a warm up this week after the bitter pre-Christmas blizzard hit our area. State police say officers responded to more than 12-hundred calls for service during the worst hours of the storm. That included 344 crashes… and almost a thousand calls for assistance by motorists.

Time has expired for Cedar Rapids property owners. The City says the blizzard officially ended at 1 o’clock Saturday… which means people needed to have their sidewalks cleared by 1 o’clock Christmas Day. The city’s regulations require cleared walkways 24-hours after the end of a winter storm event. The city says it will investigate complaints… and could send its own crews to unshoveled walkways charging property owners more than 300-dollars.

A Cedar Rapids resident was forced from his home on Christmas Eve after a fire broke out and caused significant damage. Fire crews were at the two thousand block of Washington Avenue. The person living there was not hurt but firefighters say that person couldn’t return to the house that night.

A Springville animal rescue organization is doing its best after a fire broke out making it difficult to take care of their animals. “Hercules Haven” is home to 58 animals that the nonprofit says are abused or neglected, mostly farm animals. The executive director says the fire started in the upstairs of her house. She says a dozen animals needing extra attention were inside the home when the fire broke out. They’re all safe and back inside the home.

A man who sold methamphetamine, possessed firearms, and manufactured homemade explosives will spend the next five years in federal prison. 34-year old Cody Winters of Charles City pled guilty distributing pure methamphetamine on several occasions in 2020. A search of his house resulted in the seizure of firearms and explosive materials.

And you’ve got a chance to pay off those holiday bills. The Mega Millions jackpot is estimated at 565-million dollars tonight after no one came up a winner for the game’s top prize in Friday night’s drawing. Tonight’s jackpot is the sixth-largest prize in Mega Millions’ history.
