CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Police in Cedar Rapids shot a man they say was brandishing a weapon outside HACAP’s Inn Circle Housing, early Tuesday morning. The man died as a result of the shooting. In a press release, police said they responded to a domestic disturbance at 5560 6th Street SW. The officers said they tried to detain the man as he brandished a weapon. Officers reportedly fired their weapons, killing the man. He has now been identified as 22-year-old William Isaac Rich. An autopsy has been scheduled with the Iowa State Medical Examiner. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident. The Cedar Rapids police officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with standard protocol. Their names are being withheld, pending the DCI’s investigation.

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – On Tuesday, the Iowa Departments of Public Health (IDPH) and Human Services (DHS), announced they were aligning under a new agency brand. The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) was developed through two years of work on the alignment effort between the former agencies in order to put across their new mission, vision, and guiding principles. The design elements of the new brand support the focus of the mission and vision and commemorate a new beginning together while invoking trust and stability. “Team members and partners shaped the direction for these new key elements of our agency by providing diligent, compelling feedback and input. That has been true for all of our alignment work, and this launch is no exception. We are laser-focused on sustaining, growing, and building trust with Iowans, our stakeholders, and our team – our new mission, vision, and brand speak to that promise”, said HHS Director Kelly Garcia.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — There is a limited amount of farmland, so when Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last spring prompted worries that people would go hungry as wheat remained stuck in blockaded ports, there was little U.S. farmers could do to meet the new demand. But that may be changing. Earlier this summer, the U.S. Department of Agriculture instituted new policies to encourage American farmers to begin growing two crops on one piece of land, one after the other. By changing insurance rules to lessen the risk of growing two crops, the USDA hopes to increase U.S. wheat production. As fall approaches, it’s unclear how many farmers will try the new system, but some who already grow two crops say it’s something farmers should consider.

SHELDON, Iowa (AP) — The northwest Iowa city of Sheldon planned to make the opening of a time capsule among the centerpiece events of its 150th anniversary, but it ran into a slight problem. No one can find the time capsule. The time capsule was buried 50 years ago during Sheldon’s centennial celebration. Sheldon Chamber of Commerce Director Ashley Nordahl says event organizers planned to have a town birthday celebration Friday morning featuring birthday cake and coffee as well as opening the time capsule. They then planned to place new items inside the capsule and rebury it. The other events will go on, with the time capsule unveiling delayed until workers can find it. The city will hire a company with an underground radar system to find the capsule.
