WATERLOO, Iowa (KCRG) – The Police Chief of Waterloo has resigned after accepting a position in the state of Colorado. Dr. Joel Fitzgerald served as the City’s Police Chief for two years, guiding the department through a national call for police reform and COVID-19. A news release from the city indicated Fitzerald instituted many changes to the operations of the Waterloo Police Department including cutting-edge technology upgrades to police equipment and software, embedding social workers to assist with mental health cases, Critical Incident Trained Officers (CIT), decrease in civil litigation against Waterloo PD. Effective Friday, Fitzerald will no longer be the Police Chief in Waterloo, and Assistant Chief Joe Leibold will take over the role on an interim basis. Leibold is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and has served as a member of the Waterloo Police Department since 1990. “Waterloo PD has put great people in leadership positions and has great veteran and young officers working diligently to provide for community safety. With this team in place, we are well positioned to serve the changing needs of our community, “says Assistant Chief Leibold. “I am honored to serve this department in this capacity and look forward to building even greater bonds with the residents of Waterloo.”
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – On Wednesday Transamerica and parent company Aegon confirmed job cuts are coming to their Cedar Rapids facility. Aegon notified 55 workers that their positions are being eliminated by December 31st. Aegon says it will partner with a third-party administrator to run its IT help desk. Meanwhile, Transamerica notified four other employees that their positions were being eliminated. Transamerica says the layoffs between the two companies are unrelated.
DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – The Iowa High School Athletic Association will allow student athletes to earn compensation from the use of their Name, Image and Likeness. The compensation must not be contingent on specific athletic performance or achievement. The compensation also must not be contingent on attending a particular school and the compensation must not be provided by the school or an agent of the school. Per the IHSAA, students seeking compensation for NIL should do the following:
- The student should not use the IHSAA or member school marks or logos in any NIL activity.
- The student should not wear apparel or equipment which includes the IHSAA logo or member school marks or logos for the purpose of any NIL activity.
- Student should not reference the IHSAA or member school name or mascot for the purpose of any NIL activity.
- The student should not use a member school’s facilities for the purpose of NIL activity.
- The student should not promote activities nor products associated with the following: gaming/gambling; alcoholic beverages, tobacco, cannabis, or related products; banned or illegal substances; adult entertainment products or services; or weapons (e.g., firearms).
- The student and his/her family should seek guidance from his/her member school.
- The student and his/her family should seek their own legal counsel and tax advice when considering any NIL activity.
- The student and his/her family should contact the NCAA, NJCAA, and/or NAIA to ensure any NIL activity does not jeopardize collegiate eligibility.
OTTUMWA, Iowa (KCRG) – Wednesday, at 1:13 am, the Ottumwa Police Department responded to the 300 block of Evergreen on a report that a female was shot with a crossbow. Investigators say the victim was shot with the crossbow while sleeping on a couch inside the residence. She reportedly sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital. At approximately 10:00 am, Ottumwa Police arrested 68-year-old George Edward Dennison near the wooded area around Evergreen and Mable. He was charged with Attempt to Commit Murder and Domestic Abuse Assault.
