WAUKON, Iowa (KCRG) – In March 2022, the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Waukon Police requesting assistance with a possible child abuse case regarding the Mayor of Waukon. 42-year-old Patrick Stone was asked to bring his child in for a welfare check and visible marks were found on the child. An evaluation was conducted by Veterans Memorial Hospital for Child Abuse and a special prosecutor was appointed to assist with the investigation. In May 2022, another child in Stone’s care was evaluated for child abuse. Medical staff observed marks on the arms, neck, eyelid, and ear. Stone was arrested on July 1st for two counts of child endangerment causing injury. He has since posted bond. Stone was elected as Mayor in 2019. His term as Mayor does not conclude until 2023.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – On Tuesday, Iowa City Police responded to the 300 block of Southgate Ave for a report of an individual entering the building and assaulting staff members. Upon responders’ arrival, the individual reportedly began assaulting law enforcement officers until he was detained. Police say a backpack was left at the building. The Johnson County Metro Bomb Team removed the suspicious package and the area was determined to be safe. Police say the building will remain closed until 6 am on Wednesday. A follow-up to the investigation regarding this incident was conducted at Capitol House Apartments at 320 S Dubuque St, Iowa City. During the investigation, some occupants were evacuated from the building. All occupants were later allowed to return to the building.

MONTICELLO, Iowa (KCRG) – On July 5th, David Costello was sentenced to an indeterminate term not to exceed 10 years. Costello was convicted of arson in the second degree in connection with a home explosion that occurred in Monticello back on November 17th. Court documents say he set off an explosion in his basement while police tried to talk to him. Jones County deputy James Rickels received minor burns from the flash explosion but has since recovered.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Saturday at 8:34 pm, Iowa City Police responded to a report of multiple shots fired on Shamrock Place. Crews on scene found one adult man was hit by gunfire and taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Officers found evidence of shots fired from multiple weapons. Authorities do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public with regard to this incident. The incident is under investigation.
