DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a man shot by a Davenport police officer has died. The Iowa Department of Public Safety said the officer shot 37-year-old Bobby Klum after he refused to lower his gun during a confrontation on Wednesday. Authorities said Klum was walking down a Davenport street with a gun to his head when officers arrived. The department said officers tried to defuse the situation but Klum did not comply, and an officer shot him. Klum was on parole for a sex offender registration conviction from 2017. The officer who shot him has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy anytime there is a police shooting.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — With three more home football games to go and Kinnick Stadium facing severe staffing shortages, the University of Iowa is looking for “game day volunteers” to work stadium gates, parking and other areas beginning Saturday. The Gazette reports that the university sent the plea in an email Wednesday to UI athletics department employees and staff council members. Marcus Wilson with UI athletics says it’s short about 200 workers. It’s hoping to plug the shortage with volunteers who won’t be paid, but would get free parking, a game credential with access to the premium seating areas, and a meal.

MOLINE, Ill. (AP) — More than 10,000 Deere & Co. workers have walked out strike after the United Auto Workers union said negotiators couldn’t deliver a new agreement that would meet the “demands and needs” of workers. The vast majority of the union rejected a contract offer earlier this week that would have delivered 5% raises to some workers and 6% raises to others. Thirty-five years have passed since the last major Deere strike, but workers are emboldened to demand more this year after working long hours throughout the pandemic and because companies are facing worker shortages. Illinois-based Deere says it’s committed to resolving the strike with an agreement that benefits all employees.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Police say a violent carjacking that injured a woman in Council Bluffs ended in a crash before the suspect could cross the Missouri River into Nebraska. Police say the incident began Wednesday night, when a man’s vehicle was hit from behind. Police say when the man got out to inspect the damage, someone from the other vehicle jumped into his car and drove off. Police say the victim’s wife was a passenger in the car and was seriously injured when she fell into the roadway as the carjacker sped off. Police say officers used a maneuver that caused the fleeing car to crash before it reached the Nebraska side of the bridge. The suspect was injured and taken to an Omaha, Nebraska, hospital.
