(NEW YORK) — Tropical Storm Danny made landfall Monday night in South Carolina near the Georgia border after forming in the Atlantic Monday afternoon.

Danny made landfall around 8 p.m. just north of Hilton Head on Pritchards Island.

Wind gusts were as high as 40 mph, and the storm was traveling west, northwest at a speed of 16 mph, according to the forecast.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for the area.

South Carolina and Georgia residents and visitors should prepare for the winds, up to 3 inches of rain and a minor storm surge.

Rip currents are possible off the Savannah coast, the Chatham Emergency Management Agency warned.

Danny is expected to quickly weaken into the morning.
