There’s The Answer
More than two months ago, I said in this space that any interview with Kamala Harris needed to start with one basic question: “On what issues does your opinion or stance differ from that of President Biden?”
Finally, a question along those lines was finally asked…on “The View,” of all places.
A specific question was read verbatim by the host—either that was mandated by ABC internally to make sure folks didn’t stray too far, or there was a list agreed to by the campaign–one is as likely as the other. The question was for Harris to identify just one decision made by Joe Biden as president, where she would have done something different. Her response was that she could not think of a thing where she’d have done anything differently. That quickly became a headline, and not a positive one for her.
A few hours after that live ABC interview, Harris taped a segment for CBS’s “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” where the host tried to give her a chance to soften that earlier answer…nope, still nothing came to mind.
So the bottom line is that Harris is happy to own the Biden record, and happy to say that it truly was the Biden-Harris Administration. Otherwise, she would have answered the question differently.
Granted, it’s hard to finesse such a thing…to be involved, but allow yourself a sliver of light between you. And she could have said on A or B she would go even further, or handled it slightly differently…but no, she doubled down.
After some 70 days of saying it’s time to turn the page and chart a new path forward—all very much designed to separate her from the bad Biden record—she blew up her campaign by saying she was fine with Biden’s first term, and we can expect her to in essence be Biden’s second term.
I suppose since her numbers are even worse than his were, she thinks tying herself to him helps. Or she wasn’t prepared for anything that wasn’t smoothly running on a teleprompter…could be that, too.
