CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Iowa’s News Now) — Traffic fatalities in Iowa hit highs not seen since 2016. With only a couple of days left in 2023, the DOT reported a seven year high for traffic fatalities, as 375 people died on Iowa roadways this year. There’s been about a 12% increase in traffic fatalities compared to 2021. DOT officials said Iowans have more than 90% compliance for seatbelt use, but it doesn’t reflect that in the fatality data. Officials said the increase in fatalities in November and December compared to 2022 goes back to a lot of vehicles veering off the road or crossing the center line. Safety measures that the DOT has started incorporating include adding center line and edge line rumble strips to the construction of new roads and increasing paint markings from four inches to six.
