Public universities across Iowa saw a slight increase in students this year, but are still seeing lower numbers compared to five years ago. The University of Iowa’s enrollment is down nearly 7 percent since a peak of 32,000 students in 2017. Iowa State University’s enrollment has dropped more than 17 percent since its peak of more than 36,000 in 2016. And the University of Northern Iowa has seen enrollment fall by nearly one-fourth since 2017. Iowa State saw a bigger increase of 208 students and is back to being the largest university in Iowa with an enrollment at 30,177…about 130 students more than Iowa.
A bond for a new pool and wellness center will go to voters in the College Community School District in November. The bond would not exceed $43 million. The proposal would pay for additions like a competition sized pool, walking and running track, basketball courts, and weightlifting area. It would also pay for upgrades to current athletic facilities. It would not increase tax rates in the area.
A Cedar Rapids man has been convicted of attempting to murder a Cedar Rapids police officer. Brandon Nelson faces more than 80 years in prison. Last summer, officers saw him driving recklessly. When they tried to pull him over, Nelson pulled out a shotgun and pointed it at several officers. That’s when he was shot. None of the officers were hurt.
The NewBo market in Cedar Rapids could soon expand. The market opened in October 2012. Market leaders are proposing a $3 million dollar expansion. It would have three main phases to the project, including renovating the existing seating area, adding a second story mezzanine, and also installing a new grocery store. The project is still in the design phase. Officials hope to begin construction in January 20-25.
And motorcycles are being auctioned off today as the National Motorcycle Museum’s on-line auction continues. The auction started yesterday with road art. Now, some of the bikes at the Anamosa museum will be available to bid on. You can sign up to bid online, or head to the auction in person starting at 8. The museum closed Monday after 30 years of operation due to financial struggles.
