The Iowa Supreme Court says Governor Kim Reynolds can move forward with her appeal of a temporary block on the state’s new abortion law. She announced her intentions to appeal the decision last week. The court had to say whether or not the request could move forward. The law would restrict abortions after about 6 weeks of pregnancy. Right now, abortion is legal up to 20 weeks while the law is on hold.

More child tax credits could be coming to working families. Congresswoman Ashley Hinson is introducing the “Providing for Life Act.” She says that for her, being “pro-life” goes beyond the abortion conversation. Her proposed federal family care overhaul would offer Tax Credits of up to $3,500 for children under the age of 18, and up to $4,500 for children younger than 6. It also makes the Adoption Tax Credit fully refundable and would even provide tax credits for fetuses. Rep. Hinson says the bill incentivizes states to make rules that the father covers half the cost of a woman’s pregnancy.

A former University of Iowa music professor has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for owning child pornography and distributing meth. 66-year-old John Muriello got drugs from a dealer in California and gave it to a man whose apartment is where one person later died while taking meth.

For the next month and a half, donors can not only help boost the blood supply, but also help classrooms. People who donate blood at “ImpactLife” centers and mobile blood drives will receive a voucher that can be redeemed for their choice of an e-gift card or a donation of equivalent value to the non-profit “adopt a classroom.” Donations and gift cards range from $10-$50. This promotion runs until September 10.

Today is the day RAGBRAI heads into Des Moines. An estimated 60,000 bicyclists are expected to take part in the 50-mile ride from Ames to Des Moines. Day 5 will bring riders to Toledo and Tama before Friday’s route continues to Coralville.
