DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI/KCRG) – The standoff between UPS and its employees continues as a potential strike looms. Union members with Teamsters Local 90 say they are ready to negotiate a fair contract or strike. The Teamsters Union represents 340,000 people from UPS across the country, including Iowa. Employees say they want better work hours, higher wages and better job security. UPS administrators said they’ve modified the proposal this week to address demands from union members.
FLOYD COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) – Just before 4 p.m. on July 2nd, a 2016 Jeep Cherokee, driven by 37-year-old Jenna Stangland from Minneapolis, Minnesota was traveling east on Highway 18 when the vehicle crossed the centerline and then took action to move back into the correct lane. A 2017 Toyota Prius, driven by 74-year-old Steven York from Waconia, Minnesota, was traveling west on Highway 18 and tried to avoid the Jeep and instead the two cars collided. Both Steven York and 16-year-old Keira Duffy from Golden Valley, Minnesota were pronounced dead at the scene. Stangland and 74-year-old Mary York were taken to Mercy One North Iowa.
WINNESHIEK COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) -Two people are dead after officials say a car ran a stop sign Saturday night in Winneshiek County. It happened just after 11 p.m. on County Highway B16 and 265th Avenue in Spillville. Officials say a Toyota Highlander didn’t stop at a stop sign and collided with a Chevrolet Malibu. The driver of the Highlander, 42-year-old Christopher Mirich of Waukon, died at the scene. A passenger, 54-year-old Laura Lubka of Postville also died at the scene. Three others were injured and taken to a local hospital. Officials say no one in the two cars was wearing seatbelts. The crash is under investigation.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A Cedar Rapids man is facing multiple charges after leading Linn County Deputies on a high speed chase Saturday evening. A deputy attempted to stop 24 year old Michael Bowman for going 80mph in a 65mph zone on Hwy 100 eastbound at Ellis Rd shortly after 8pm on Saturday. Officials say Bowman did not stop, instead continuing eastbound and reaching speeds of 125mph before exiting on Covington Rd, heading west on Hwy 100, and exiting onto Hwy 30 eastbound before entering southwest Cedar Rapids. Bowman then pulled into the parking lot behind the GNC located at 2320 Edgewood Rd SW where he was taken into custody. Bowman was transported to the Linn County Jail for an outstanding warrant as well as charges of Attempting to Elude and multiple traffic offences.
