Davenport officials say two of the five missing residents of a collapsed downtown apartment building have been located. Two others may be in the rubble left behind after a section of the Davenport Apartments collapsed Sunday afternoon. It’s uncertain if the fifth person was in the building at that time.
The son of one of the people suspected to be in that rubble has been sleeping outside the site as he waits for any news about his father. Branden Covin, Jr., says he’s graduating this weekend, but says he’s not sure if he can emotionally handle going to the ceremonies.
A Waterloo woman is facing charges in connection with a fatal stabbing from nearly two weeks ago. Sarah Nagy Brown is charged with first degree murder after the stabbing of 54-year-old Roberta Nagy at the Fereday Court apartments.
A sixth person is now facing charges in connection with a fatal shooting in Dubuque in February that left one man dead. Police say 27-year-old Kenneth Reed is charged with first degree murder and robbery. They say U.S. Marshals arrested him in Mason City. Police say officers found Lonnie Burns with several gunshot wounds while responding to a report of shots fired.
Gov. Kim Reynolds say Iowa will send National Guard troops to the Southern border to enforce border patrols. The governor is one of 13 Republican governors across the nation sending a total of 1,300 guardsmen and more than 200 law enforcement personnel at the request of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. Gov. Reynolds says the Guard will help deter and repel unlawful border crossings.
The University of Iowa has named an interim athletics director after longtime director Gary Barta announced last week that he’s retiring August 1. Deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer Beth Goetz will take over, as a national search for Barta’s permanent replacement gets started.
