I Don’t Remember Being There

I got an email yesterday from someone whose name I did not recognize, with the subject line, “Thank you for meeting our company at NAB”…I’m leaving his name and the company name out of this story for reasons that will become clear.

NAB stands for National Association of Broadcasters…and their trade show was last week in Las Vegas.

The email message began by saying, “Jeff, It was great meeting you at NAB. We had an amazing show this year. Hope you had an equally exciting event.”

Then came a bit more of a sales pitch. It concluded by saying “We want to take a moment to thank you for stopping by our booth and look forward to our synergies together.”

That’s a very nice follow up email after a meeting and exchange of business cards, etc.

One problem, though: I wasn’t in Las Vegas last week, and did not attend the NAB convention and trade show. The last time I did was…I’m checking my notes now…the year 2009.

Yes, I’ve been traveling a lot this month, but not outside of Iowa and certainly not to Vegas. I’m pretty sure I would have remembered…despite the popular phrase about “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas”.

Great example of mass emails gone wrong, merging with the “master list of people we want to reach” instead of the “list of folks who actually stopped by”. And a great example of why just because an email has our name in it and pretends to be from an important person…it’s probably just someone wanting to separate us from our money, whether for a political donation or business.

So to all of you, don’t fall for an email scam. And to the sender of the email to me, I enjoyed meeting you too. See you next year.
