DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – In a 57-39 vote, the Iowa House passed a bill that would ban minors from receiving “gender transition procedures.” SF538 would ban puberty blockers, hormone therapies, and other related surgeries for Iowans under the age of 18. It would also prohibit any surgeries on minors intended to affirm a gender that does not match the person’s sex at birth. The bill now goes to the governor to be signed into law.
MARION, Iowa (KCRG) – A Marion teen is facing charges after allegedly beating up his girlfriend so severely that he asked a friend to dispose of the body when he thought she had died. Trevor Dean is accused of Willful Injury Resulting in Serious Injury for the incident, which happened on February 3 in the 1300 block of Meadowview Drive in Marion. In a criminal complaint, officials said Dean mistakenly believed his girlfriend was cheating on him, so he invited her over to his apartment under the guise of having a “surprise” to give her. The document says Dean texted a friend, saying “Something Finna go down wait till you use my knuckles after,” and “I’m Finna let all my anger out.” When his girlfriend arrived, Dean reportedly began punching here in the face and the body, breaking her teeth, nose and orbital bone, and even recorded the aftermath of the assault, including his knuckles. Law enforcement said the recording showed the woman on the floor, unconscious and gasping for air. The criminal complaint also said Dean asked his friend to help him dispose of the body because he thought the woman had died when she stopped gasping for air.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A 42-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for possessing meth that he intended to distribute. Evidence at the sentencing hearing showed that, on October 8, 2021, a bail bondsman and his friend were attempting to locate Richard Dean Hamilton, Jr. to take him into custody for an active warrant. The bail bondsman and his friend utilized a woman to set up a deal to purchase methamphetamine from Hamilton, Jr. at a Dairy Queen in Cedar Rapids. During the set-up drug deal, the bail bondsman and his friend pulled up in their vehicle and approached Hamilton, Jr. The bail bondsman told Hamilton, Jr., that he had a warrant, but Hamilton, Jr. resisted arrest. During the struggle, the friend of the bail bondsman struck Hamilton, Jr., with an asp baton. At one point, Hamilton, Jr., grabbed the bail bondsman’s handgun and a knife, swinging it at the bondsman. The bail bondsman yelled that Hamilton, Jr., had a knife, and the bail bondsman’s friend fired one shot at Hamilton, Jr., striking him in the leg. Hamilton, Jr., then drove off in his vehicle, dragging the bail bondsman through the parking lot before the bail bondsman was able to release himself free. Hamilton, Jr., drove away and went to a residence belonging to someone he knew. Officers located him at that residence, and he was taken to the hospital for his injuries. In his car, officers located an empty baggie and six bags containing a total of 49.32 grams of methamphetamine. Hamilton, Jr., was sentenced to 120 months’ imprisonment, and must also serve a 5-year term of supervised release after the prison term.
EDGEWOOD, Iowa (KCRG) – More than a year-and-a-half after a deadly ATV crash in Edgewood, the Iowa State Patrol says a suspect has been arrested. The accident happened in May 2021 when the ATV that Jordan Cabalka, 32, was a passenger on, lost control on Woods Edge Drive. He had been working for the Edgewood Fire Department for two years. The driver in that crash has now been charged with vehicular homicide while driving under the influence. Iowa State Patrol said 26-year-old Hannah Meese was driving the ATV when she lost control on a curve in the road. She was also injured in the accident.
