Hogan Seeks To Be A Hero
Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan yesterday pulled his name out of consideration for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. He was an anti-Trumper who says he decided not to run because the more “not Trump” candidates in the field, the better the chance Trump would win…and Hogan does not want that to happen.
Businessman Perry Johnson, who was on KXEL last month, officially got in over the weekend…businessman Vivek Ramaswamy is in…and so is former South Carolina governor and U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley.
And of course, there’s Donald Trump, who blew the roof off of CPAC on Saturday afternoon while potential rivals Ron DeSantis, Mike Pompeo and Mike Pence spoke at a different gathering elsewhere near the nation’s capital.
As we’ve noted here before, the 2024 GOP race looks a lot like the 2020 Democrat race…all the “not Bernie Sanders” folks dropped out behind Joe Biden to deny Sanders the nomination. The same idea is at play here…but this is the difference: in the 2020 Democrat race, those candidates were in and then dropped out, while the Hogan approach in 2024 is to not even bother to get in.
Hogan wants to be a hero here, but in reality, it smells of swampy politics and backroom deals…otherwise, why not run and see if the people want you? Unless, of course, he’s admitting with this move that he wouldn’t stand a chance of becoming the lead “not Trump” candidate given the others in the field already…and soon to come.
We’ve all had enough of so-called elites deciding who should run and who should not. How about letting the people actually decide? I know, a novel concept…but one worth trying.
