CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa teenager pleaded guilty to murder in the deaths of his parents in 2021. Ethan Alexander Orton pleaded guilty Monday to first-degree murder in the deaths of his parents 42-year-old Casey Arthur Orton and 41-year-old Misty Scott-Slade of Cedar Rapids. Police were called about 2 a.m. on Oct. 14, 2021, to check out suspicious noises coming from a home and found the then-17-year-old Orton covered in blood. According to a criminal complaint, he told police he used a knife to stab his parents and then used an ax on his mother when she appeared to be alive. Police say Orton admitted to killing his parents as part of a desire to “take charge of his life.” Orton will be sentenced later.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – On Monday, the Linn County Attorney’s Office announced charges against a 37-year-old man from Cedar Rapids in connection with the stabbing death of Devonna Walker. Officials announced Shane Teslik of Cedar Rapids, 37, was arrested and charged with Voluntary Manslaughter and Disorderly Conduct. On January 2nd, police responded to a report of a stabbing in the 2100 block of North Towne Court Northeast at about 6:45 p.m. In a video, several people are seen shouting at each other before a scuffle ensues and Walker is stabbed.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Cedar Rapids police have made an arrest in connection with a shooting that happened on I-380 last year. In a news release, police said 20-year-old James Kellup was arrested Monday on an outstanding warrant for the shooting that happened at about 5 p.m. on August 24, 2022. Police said it happened on I-380 near the H Avenue area. Kellup faces charges of Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon and Conspiracy to Commit a Forcible Felony.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The Cedar Rapids Airport Commission approved an increase to parking fees, and $4.6 million in funding for the fourth phase of its terminal modernization project for the Eastern Iowa Airport during a meeting on Monday. The project includes expanding the terminal concourse, with some demolition, geothermal work and adding doors and windows. Work is expected to begin next week, pending approval from the FAA. The airport commission said parking fees will increase by a dollar to $9 for the long term parking, up two dollars to $16 for short term parking, and up two dollars to $18 for full service valet. The commission said the increase is due to inflation and will help cover the cost of improvements. The increase is expected to take effect April 1.
