Blizzard and winter storm warnings are still in effect and it will stay that way until tonight. The National weather Service says dangerous wind chills are still the biggest health hazard right now thanks to strong winds, with gusts of 40-miles per hour.
Lowden reported the deepest snowfall with just under six inches measured. Cedar Rapids saw four inches. And most other areas saw just about that much.
Cancellations are continuing at the Eastern Iowa Airport this morning. More than half of incoming and outgoing flights were cancelled Thursday. That could continue today as winds remain brisk throughout the Midwest.
The Salvation Army in Cedar Rapids now has its overflow shelter open 24 hours a day to help bring people in from the cold. Volunteers yesterday fed 75 people who got relief from the bitter cold temperatures we’re seeing.
Doctors are warning you about the dangers of frostbite and how fast it can impact you. State Patrol also is warning against driving, but says it’s essential to have warm weather supplies in your car, a fully charged cell phone, and a travel plan you shared with people along your route.
Accidents have been reported throughout Iowa since the storm first started leaving an impact Wednesday. That includes one involving a Johnson County deputy. The department reports a Johnson County squad car was struck. The deputy was not in the car and was not hurt.
Alliant Energy is warning people about an apparent scam. The utility says some customers have gotten calls threatening to cut off power within a half-hour unless they immediately make payment. Alliant emphasizes it does not call customers and demand immediate payment.
The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium has announced the Delta in the National River Center is closed until further notice. Staff members say the exhibit appeared to have a malfunction in the life support system, causing gas embolisms in the animals. Eight stingrays died, while one remains in stable condition. The cause of the malfunction and lack of alarm notification is still under investigation.
