CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A man died after a head-on crash on Highway 13 and Mount Vernon Road on Wednesday morning. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office said it happened at about 7:47 a.m. when a utility truck heading westbound collided head-on with an SUV heading eastbound, turning north. The driver of the SUV, 37-year-old Benjamin Sanders of Cedar Rapids, was taken to Mercy Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The driver of the utility truck was not injured. The crash remains under investigation.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A 4-year-old boy died after a car that was reportedly racing crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed into two vehicles. Police in Des Moines, Iowa, say a car and an SUV were racing along a four-lane road Tuesday night when the car crossed the median. The car first struck a vehicle carrying the 4-year-old, an adult and another child. The car then struck another vehicle carrying an adult driver. The 4-year-old was killed and everyone else involved was injured and taken to Des Moines hospitals. All are expected to recover. Police say the racing SUV left the area. Authorities are asking for the public’s help in locating that driver.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (KCRG) – The Marshalltown Community School District has announced they are canceling school for the remainder of the week. The District cited high levels of student and staff illness-related absences. There will be no school-sponsored extracurricular activities on Thursday or Friday either because of this. School classes and activities are scheduled to resume on Monday, December 19th, 2022. The School District posted the following message: “We know this creates an inconvenience for many of our families relative to childcare, and we don’t make these decisions unless deemed absolutely necessary. Our hope is that, within the next few days of rest and recuperation, everyone can become healthy and finish the 2022 portion of our school year strong. Thank you to everyone in the Marshalltown community for your resilience, patience, and understanding during this challenging time.”

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Cedar Rapids Police have arrested an individual on arson charges in relation to a fire that occurred back in September. On September 29th, crews responded to a report of a residential fire in the 2100 block of 9th St. SW. Multiple emergency personnel responded and fought the fire inside. One firefighter was injured when ceiling materials gave way and fell on him. Responders also treated an adult male in the front yard that was suffering from burns and wounds sustained in the fire. Cedar Rapids Police announced on December 12th, that an individual named Jesse James was arrested and charged with arson for their role in the incident.
