They Had Thought Of That
These days, I don’t often get the chance to go out and cover campaign events; doing a three hour daily show plus everything else makes that logistically difficult.
It really is the best way to see first hand how candidates interact with the public, and vice versa. You can pretty quickly determine true energy and determination from talking points and polite applause.
But I did get a chance to attend the Iowa GOP Fly Around event Monday morning at the Waterloo Regional Airport; you heard it on KXEL yesterday morning.
This was the “closing argument” made by the GOP team, after an extended bus trip organized by the Reynolds for Governor campaign.
Stepping off the plane were the governor, secretary of agriculture, U.S. Senator, candidate for attorney general, and candidate for state treasurer. A congresswoman joined them at the stop.
They flew in on a private plane—plenty safe, but it occurred to me that having all those folks on one plane is…well, let’s just say risky in the event the worst happened.
And I wasn’t the only one…I heard from a couple of you who heard the event on the radio and wondered the same thing.
But then I looked again and noticed that one person who was on the bus tour was not on the fly around—the lieutenant governor. In other words, the one to lead the state should something happen to the governor. Iowa’s secretary of state was also not on the trip, since he was in Des Moines attending to issues concerning the voting itself, since his office is in charge of that.
So to those who wondered if this was a good idea…there was indeed someone left in Des Moines in case the unthinkable happened.
