Seeing Ghosts

As if the normal political scene isn’t spooky or scary enough these days, we take a moment on this Friday before Halloween to note that Iowa is number 10 in the nation for the number of ghost-sightings per capita. This is according to a survey by Porch.

They used ghost sighting reports from the Ghosts of America web site—I swear I am not making this up, there apparently is such a thing—as well as Census Bureau data for population statistics…and that supposedly tells them where the ghostliest places in the U.S. are located.

Maine, for what it’s worth, is the ghostliest state—58 encounters per 100,000 residents.

Conversely, New York is “least haunted”…only 8.1 sightings per 100,000 people…but frankly, these days New York is scary enough without the need for ghosts.

Seven percent of active U.S. military bases located in this country at had at least one ghost sighting, with Fort Knox being the most haunted. Must be all that gold located next door.

Iowa has 32.7 ghost sightings per 100,000 residents…just cracking the “top ten”.

Makes you want to hunker down at home…except nearly one-third of the ghost encounters, 31 percent, happen at home—that’s far and away the most popular place for ghost sightings.

Not sure what you can do with any of this information…except again to note that as scary as campaign ads are this time of year…lots of Iowans have seen real ghosts. Then again, they might be more welcome than another weekend’s worth of those darn ads.
