One At A Time
You might hear me today and think, “wow, he’s really getting to be a curmudgeon in his old age.”  But the truth is, I’ve been this way for years.
We just started the month of October. I’m not good with having Christmas decorations in stores already.
I wasn’t good with having Halloween stuff on the shelves on Labor Day weekend, but that holiday was at least in the adjacent month. Christmas on October 1st? Not so much.
It makes for a confusing trip down the store aisles. I could literally get a garden rake for fall clean up on the left side…and lights for my Christmas tree on the right. I suppose that Santa costume could work for Halloween…but even that’s a stretch.
There’s something wrong when I’m picking up a bag of potting soil for plants still being kept outdoors…and have the option of picking up an inflatable snowman to put in the yard next to them.
My normal rule, as I’ve mentioned here repeatedly, is the “one holiday at a time” approach…finish with one before you start shilling for the next one.
I understand the importance of Christmas in a retail store’s yearly success. And I understand that many folks spend Thanksgiving weekend putting up the Christmas tree, so you need to have things on the shelves early…so I’ll go along with Christmas stuff being available earlier than my rule allows…but let’s have the general election first, at least.
I should not be able to buy both the pumpkin spice flavored Cheerios along with a similar box colored red and green. Then again, neither option should ever be available.
