We Already Know
I recall the old Pepe Le Pew cartoons…you know, the male skunk who was always trying to woo the female cat. She, of course, would shy away because…well, he was a skunk.
In one of the cartoons, Pepe pulled out a can of black paint and covered his distinctive white stripe…so that he would look like a cat and be appealing to the subject of his affection.
But she wasn’t fooled…no matter how many times he tried to reinvent himself or say he was a cat…he was a skunk.
I was reminded of this yesterday when a regional communications director at the White House emailed to offer us an interview with a member of the White House Council of Economic Advisors to rebut those who falsely claimed–their words–that there was a recession, citing one lone source that did not define recession the way it seems we always have…two straight quarters of GDP decline. That’s hardly a “false claim” of a recession, but they were trying to spin it and I understand.
You can try to call it something else. You can tag those who state it as “falsely claiming” something. But just like the cat who was the subject of Pepe Le Pew’s affection, we know when something stinks.
And this economy clearly stinks…and no amount of paint can hide that fact from the American people who are living with the ill effects of government malfeasance on the issue.
