On Hold
This is the last week of July…it’s RAGBRAI week, and the week many folks hold their county fairs…all in a desire to get things wrapped up before we turn the calendar page to August–and much of Iowa is put on hold.
Understandably so, because for a third of the month, the great Iowa State Fair will be held, becoming the focus of so many people’s attention. Statewide elected officials spend most of their time there, families annually spend a couple of weeks camping nearby, and we city folk take a day or two to take in the sites. Add in all the businesses and other entities who have exhibits there…and good luck finding anyone you need to reach.
Before and after the fair, of course, families will try to cram in remaining summer vacation time…because school will be starting before you know it, and barely after the fair ends. That means getting kids ready for school, getting schools ready for kids, and everything else tied to that.
The bottom line is, Iowa is going to be pretty much put on hold for a month. I’ve already heard from some folks who we talk to on the radio regularly that their schedules are jumbled next month.
As for me, it’s been a pretty intensive July…so if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. I might be harder to find myself during August, because of all that unused vacation time staring me in the face. You’ll still hear this segment each weekday, as well as Iowa Almanac and the Iowa Business Report…but for much else…I may just see how the other half lives, and put my August on hold on well.
By the way, I’m really bad at taking time off, so I thought if I put the thought out into the world, maybe it will happen. There’s probably a better chance of winning Mega Millions, though.
