Viewpoints of Convenience

This is nothing new, of course…but sometimes, it’s necessary to talk about the fact that if you want consistency out of a politician…you’re going to be waiting a long time.

Go ahead, pick your topic…ending the filibuster rule in the U.S. Senate, accepting decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court even if you don’t like them, cracking down on public demonstrations in the streets, and yes, even abortion.

Cable TV channels…they used to be called news channels, but there’s hardly any news to get in the way of opinion…those channels are full of hosts tsk-tsking about inconsistent statements made by politicians, complete with grainy video from decades gone by showing how the politician took an entirely different stand then as opposed to now…usually based solely on what party is in power at whatever time.

It’s almost become laughable…and it would be, if it didn’t mean potentially tragic consequences for our republic.

It sort of like pro wrestling…arch enemies become teammates with the toss of a chair into the ring. The difference is…and spoiler alert for some of you…that pro wrestling is entertainment (after all, that’s what the E in WWE stands for). Politics is not supposed to be full of fake rage and convenient viewpoints.

But that’s what we have, thanks to cable, social media, and all other newer forms of communication. We used to be able to look past all that and see what they really stood for. Increasingly, though…it’s harder and harder to tell.
