Fraudulently Swindling People

I got an email yesterday from a musical duo I’ve followed; occasionally they’ll send out news of where they’re going to appear, some notes about things at home…similar to what lots of folks do.

This, though, seemed fishy even at the early morning hour when I saw it. It was from their email address, but the subject line suggested they wanted a favor and sought a reply.

That’s a classic scam, hacking into someone’s email and sending messages in the hope someone will bite and then offer up the serial number to a gift card or some such thing. I ignored it, and not long after, came a second email from the real people, with the subject line “for real, not a scam”–acknowledging the hack, apologizing for the trouble, and saying they’ve changed their passwords to prevent further problems.

What struck me was the closing paragraph, which so nicely sums up life in these times: “This is the world we live in evidently, a world where people wake up each day thinking of how to fraudulently swindle people out of money. And they are good at it. Please be careful.”

I was struggling to come up with a nice, week-ending topic for this segment…and decided I’d look for something good, positive, or uplifting. I tried, but couldn’t find anything. Instead, it’s the same old in-fighting everywhere you look.

So perhaps the note from a couple of folk singers is the best way to close the short work week…be careful, because there are people who wake up each day trying to get you. We should be better than that…because otherwise it’s quite a missed opportunity given the blessings we have in this world.
