Violating Rules—I Guess
I don’t do Facebook myself, but I can cause things to be published on the KXEL Facebook page. I was a little concerned, therefore, when I got an email the other day saying one of my posts had been blocked due to violating the ever-nebulous Facebook community standards policy.
Then I was really concerned…because the post in question was from March 23rd—of 2018. That’s right, the post was such an affront to community standards, that it took Facebook more than four years to get around to blocking it.
Even better was the subject…a dog puppet. Specifically, the beloved television star Floppy of 60s and 70s cartoon show fame. I posted a photo of the dog puppet in honor of National Puppy Day…put “National Puppy Day” as a hashtag…and then listed the website, thefloppyshow.com.
So it wasn’t political. It wasn’t about COVID treatment. It wasn’t about elections. It was…about a dog puppet and commemorating National Puppy Day…51 months ago.
I could try to speculate on all this, but why put good effort to waste? The complete randomness of how a social media outlet like that can arbitrarily block speech—due to fouled up algorthyms—is quite unsettling, however.
Another reason why I don’t do Facebook. It’s simply not worth it.
