It’s Still All Local
In another sign of our fractured politics these days, it will be some time before we know the outcome of some of the state primary races from yesterday’s voting. And ultimately, it’s further proof that regardless of outside intervention, some candidates just can’t be saved.
Much of the national focus was on Pennsylvania’s GOP race for U.S. Senate, a seat the party really needs to hold in order to have hope of winning majority in the chamber. As I record this early Wednesday morning, some 2,500 votes separate the top two, with each getting more than 300,000 votes and another 100,000 are left to be counted. You have one candidate, Mehmet Oz, with Trump’s endorsement…and one, Dave McCormick, touting Trump policies…hence, the dead heat.
In North Carolina, an early Trump endorsement of Congressman Ted Budd helped pave the way for a big win there, but even a Trump endorsement couldn’t save one-term Congressman Madison Cawthorn from his own unforced errors and scandals.
Next week, the focus is on Georgia, where a Trump-endorsed candidate and former U.S. Senator, David Perdue, is trying to unseat an incumbent GOP governor, Brian Kemp. Georgia is obviously a different situation from Idaho due to concerns about election security…but worthy to note that yesterday in Idaho, the Trump-endorsed lieutenant governor failed badly in her attempt to unseat the incumbent governor.
So again, it’s all local…and hard to get people to vote for someone else…when they’ve already shown they’ll vote for the incumbent in the chair.
