Can’t Win

The Iowa legislature is in overtime, as it were…they seemed to be on path for perhaps even an early adjournment, but that didn’t happen. And last week, they ran out of per diem expenses, so most of them were sent home for most of the past two weeks so leadership could figure out common ground on final issues.

That led one Democrat representative from Clinton to tweet that they were not holding debate because Republicans were FUBAR…an acronym standing for…well, messed up. Way to stay classy, Madame Representative.

So let’s get this straight…if Republicans in the House, the Senate, and the Governor’s office all agree on things…then they are robots who simply steamroll things through lock step. And if they are not in full agreement, then they are too disorganized to govern. As the saying goes, you can’t win for losing.

Frankly, I don’t have a problem with there being a variety of ideas that are discussed, leading to compromise on details following agreement on general principles. I don’t have a problem when it’s Democrats and Republicans disagreeing and then working together; and I don’t have a problem when it’s folks from the same party.

It used to be in Iowa that the disputes were more rural vs. urban as opposed to red vs. blue. We may have those same splits now within the partisan caucuses. But contrary to the profane tweet, I’m guessing they are not beyond all repair.
