Here Comes The Snow
Yesterday, I talked about how Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucus status was in jeopardy, at least on the Democrat side. Now that the party has indicated it wants “pitches” from states regarding who should be holding nominating contests early on, it seems the flakes flying in some parts of Iowa today are not the only “snow job” out there.
Witness this from Politico–again, an overall good source, but certainly not a friend to Republicans.
They credit ABC News as reporting that New Jersey Democrats are pitching that state for consideration as one of the early presidential primary states. That no doubt would help Sen. Cory Booker, who ran for president in 2020 and whose Senate office put me on their mailing list for news releases last year…clearly to me indicating a desire to keep in touch with Iowa voters, it was not at my request.
The New Jersey state committee chair noted in a letter to the Democratic National Committee that “New Jersey presents a cost-effective alternative for candidates who find other early states’ media markets too expensive, as well as a diverse state that captures many of the party’s key demographics.”
Then comes what Politico calls the reality check–all of New Jersey is within either the New York City or Philadelphia media markets, two of the four largest and most expensive in the country. They note, “it is inconceivable that it would be more affordable than buying ad time in, say, Iowa or South Carolina.”
Doesn’t matter how often they say it…doesn’t make it so. New Jersey may have its merits…but to claim it has more cost-effective media than either Iowa or South Carolina?
Looks like the politicians themselves aren’t the only ones who tell whoppers. Keep that snow shovel handy, friends.
