They Can Agree On This – Sort Of

There is precious little that folks on the political left and the political right can agree on these days…but I may have one.

Energy independence. That’s it, energy independence.

But they only agree because they are completely at odds on what it means and how to address it.

This comes up because in an effort to address the current global energy crisis, the Biden Administration has looked to Venezuela and Iran to help the U.S. with its oil needs. That has even gotten some of those on the left up in arms, because those nations are not our friends, and we should not be held hostage by them for energy needs.

That’s the part both the left and right can agree on—that it is really, really bad policy to rely on hostile nations to supply us with a basic need.

Obviously, those on the left say this proves that their green energy plans are the answer, so everyone should buy an electric car, etc.  Those on the right say even if that was the answer, it’s 20 years away and we need to reopen domestic pipelines and return to the energy independence we enjoyed before Biden took office. Since that means Trump-era policies were correct, you’ll never get the folks on the left to go along.

Usually, getting the opposing sides to agree on an issue is a starting point for resolution. Unfortunately, while both may want energy independence, they could not be further apart on going from there.
